A really good team performance, which Antonio Conte would have definitely been proud of. That may have been the game which could help Tottenham get their season back on track.
It's always a similar story when Manchester City arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The visitors dominate possession and always come close. But for some reason, they never manage to find the back of the net. Tottenham's counter attacking style paired with the type of players which have played for Spurs in the last few years suit this fixture down to a tee. It's a game where Spurs are able to put virtually every man behind the ball when defending, whilst being able to counter attack so lethally due to the calibre of attacking players which we possess as well as Manchester City's full throttle attitude to attacking.
Yesterday, we defended superbly. Every player won their individual battles throughout the game, and there were some really nice patterns of play to play out of trouble. We dealt with their attacks pretty well, often forcing them back to their goalkeeper, which would always receive a great reception from the home fans.
We were aggressive when defending, but we were also intelligent (maybe Romero is an exception for the latter.) Time and time again, one of our defenders were pushing right up against their opposite number, really suffocating the visitors, and time and time again forcing them into making a pass which they were reluctant to make.
Once we had won the ball back, we attacked very effectively. Utilising Son's pace and Kulusevski's decision making to move up the pitch as fast as possible. Son seemed more lively, and was at the heart of most our attacks. Whilst Kulusevski, doesn't look back to his razor sharp best just yet, it was still an encouraging display from the Swede.
I thought that we also used Kane as an outlet very effectively, by giving him the ball in the right moments where he was able to create opportunities to exploit the weaknesses in the City defence. He was instrumental.
The midfield was immense. They were unbelievable in all aspects. It became very clear which midfield was going to come out on top from early on. Coincidentally, it was the first time this season where our midfield has not been outnumbered, in fact the numerical advantage was often in our favour since Eric Dier, in particular was stepping up higher than the back line to help the press when the time was right. It was definitely the most dominant display that Bentancur and Højbjerg have put out this season.
Emerson Royal was the star man in defence. Winning virtually all of his battles against Jack Grealish, as well as catalysing a few attacks. It must be said, the Brazilian divides opinion amongst the fan base. But, he has been superb in the last couple of games. It is clear that Emerson thrives in these sort of games, where it's more about the defensive aspect than trying to force a way through in the final third. Nonetheless, credit to him and hopefully he can keep it up.
Lastly, how could I not mention the great achievement of Harry Kane. Our all time top goalscorer. What a moment. I'm so glad it was at home, in a worthy game that was fitting for such a historic landmark. He is such an amazing player, and we are lucky to be able to watch him week in week out. It is something which I feel very grateful for. He deserves the world here at Spurs, and I really hope we can win a trophy for him. It's only fair really.
A legendary moment, for a legend of the game. A great performance as well. Also, speedy recovery for our boss. He was missed yesterday.
Onwards and upwards, COYS!
